As traditional symbols of success become increasingly accessible, a different form of status is emerging – one measured not only by what we acquire, but by what we understand and preserve biologically.

For generations, status has been something we could see. The right watch, the right car, the right address, the private club membership, first-class travel, tailored clothing, and objects and experiences have long communicated achievement, access, wealth, and position. But status symbols evolve because scarcity evolves. As yesterday’s luxuries become increasingly accessible, their ability to differentiate begins to diminish. What was once available only to a small group eventually becomes attainable by many more people, and status migrates toward something that remains difficult to acquire, access, or preserve.
That raises an interesting question: What happens when the next meaningful status symbol is not something other people can see? The answer may already be emerging. Increasingly, people are spending money not merely on how they look or what they own, but on understanding what is happening inside their bodies. They are tracking sleep, cardiovascular fitness, glucose, recovery, body composition, and other dimensions of physiology. They are purchasing wearables, advanced testing, personalized nutrition, executive health services, and longevity-focused programs. The next luxury status symbol may be biological – not simply how healthy you appear, but how much you understand about your biology, how deliberately you steward it, and ultimately, what you have been able to preserve.
From Material Status to Biological Status
The behavioral shift underlying this idea is already measurable. McKinsey’s 2025 Future of Wellness research estimates that wellness has become a $2 trillion global industry. In the United States alone, consumers spend more than $500 billion annually on wellness, while 84 percent of U.S. consumers describe wellness as a top or important priority. The same research found growing interest in healthy aging and noted that consumers increasingly seek science-backed approaches, health-tracking devices, and other technologies that provide greater visibility into their health.
That does not establish that biology has become a status symbol. It establishes something more fundamental: people are devoting substantial attention, money, and technology to understanding and influencing their biological condition. Biological measurement itself is also becoming increasingly commonplace. Pew Research Center reported in 2026 that 37 percent of U.S. adults own a smartwatch. Among upper-income adults, ownership rises to 47 percent. Nearly half of upper-income American adults carrying a biological measurement device on their wrist is not proof of a new status hierarchy, but it is evidence of a significant cultural change. Information about the body that once required a clinical encounter can increasingly accompany a person throughout the day.
Taken together, these trends suggest a larger progression in the meaning of status. For much of modern consumer history, status was predominantly material: what I own. As luxury evolved, experience and exclusivity became increasingly important: what I can access. I believe another dimension is now emerging: what I can preserve. I call this biological status.
Biological status is not about looking thin, appearing younger, or performing athletic feats. Appearance can be misleading, and outward fitness is not synonymous with the internal condition of a biological system. Biological status is better understood as the measurable condition and deliberate stewardship of one’s biology. That distinction changes the question from “Do I look healthy?” or even “Do I feel healthy?” to something considerably more sophisticated: What does my biology actually show, and how is it changing over time?
Successful People Already Understand
the Management Principle
There is an interesting contradiction at the highest levels of professional and financial success. An executive may know company performance down to the percentage point. An investor may know precisely how a portfolio is allocated. A business owner may monitor cash flow, margins, revenue growth, customer acquisition costs, and dozens of other indicators. Valuable assets are measured because measurement creates visibility, and visibility allows more informed decisions. Yet the biological system that makes it possible to build and enjoy those assets is often approached much less systematically.
Health information may be distributed among an annual physical, laboratory results, a smartwatch, a specialist, a dietitian, a fitness program, and whatever information happens to be collected elsewhere. Each source can be valuable, but possessing information is not the same thing as having a coordinated understanding of a system. This is where the financial analogy becomes useful. No serious portfolio manager would examine one holding and conclude that it represents the condition of the entire portfolio. Nor would the manager make consequential decisions without considering relationships, exposures, trends, and changes over time.
Human biology is vastly more complex than a financial portfolio, but the underlying management principle is relevant: what matters should be measured in context rather than understood through isolated snapshots. You can replace a watch, you can rebuild a portfolio, but you cannot purchase yesterday’s biology.
The Problem Is No Longer Simply Access to Data
Biological stewardship does not mean obsessively tracking every available health metric. More data does not automatically produce more understanding. The objective is to identify biologically relevant information, establish a meaningful baseline, interpret relationships among those findings, determine where clinically appropriate attention may be warranted, intervene when appropriate, and then measure again. The important transition, therefore, is not merely from no data to more data. It is from fragmented data to coordinated interpretation.
That distinction is becoming increasingly important as consumers gain access to unprecedented amounts of health information. A smartwatch can generate continuous streams of physiological information and laboratory platforms can return dozens of values. At-home testing, digital health platforms, genetic testing, continuous monitoring, and other technologies can add still more information. The emerging challenge may therefore be less about obtaining data and increasingly about determining what deserves attention, what the information means in context, and how different pieces relate to one another.
Independent healthcare research is pointing in the same direction. Deloitte reported in 2026 that consumers now have more ways to access diagnostic testing and results through self-ordered testing, virtual health, digital tools, wearables, and AI-enabled platforms. Deloitte characterized the direction of the market as increasingly data-driven, consumer-centered, and personalized. It also reported that 76 percent of surveyed healthcare providers expected consumer- and patient-initiated demand to significantly change the diagnostics market over the following three years.
That creates an interesting paradox. The more biological information we acquire, the greater the need becomes for systems capable of making sense of it. The luxury of the future may not be having the most biological data. It may be having the infrastructure to understand it.
Why Inflammation Exposes the Problem
Inflammation illustrates the limitations of fragmented biological thinking particularly well. Inflammation is often discussed as though it were a single thing. It isn’t. Inflammatory biology intersects with metabolic function, cardiovascular physiology, immune signaling, cellular processes, nutritional status, tissue repair, genetics, lifestyle, and other biological systems. A single measurement can therefore provide valuable information without necessarily explaining what is occurring across the larger biological landscape.

Beyond Optimization
The health and wellness industry frequently uses the word “optimization,” but optimization assumes that the underlying system has first been sufficiently characterized. Before attempting to optimize something, it makes sense to understand it. The first question should not automatically be which supplement to add, which diet to follow, which wearable to purchase, or which intervention happens to be popular. More fundamental questions come first: What should be measured? What does the resulting pattern suggest? What deserves attention? And after an intervention, what actually changed?

The analogy is intentional, but it has limits. Human beings are not financial instruments, and biological outcomes cannot be managed with the predictability of a spreadsheet. The value of the analogy comes from the discipline it introduces. We readily accept that valuable financial assets deserve measurement, professional interpretation, risk assessment, and ongoing management. Our biology deserves at least as much attention.
The Luxury of Knowing
Luxury has historically been associated with scarcity. In the coming years, one increasingly valuable form of scarcity may be meaningful biological visibility. Not perfect knowledge, medicine cannot provide that, but greater visibility into what is happening inside the body, how relevant measurements are changing, whether an intervention corresponds with measurable change, and where additional clinical attention may be appropriate.
That is different from simply purchasing more healthcare. Historically, premium healthcare has often been associated with access: more physician time, faster appointments, concierge service, greater convenience, and access to specialists. Those benefits remain valuable. But another dimension is emerging alongside access: understanding.
The combination of a $2 trillion wellness economy, widespread adoption of personal health technology, growing interest in healthy aging, and increasingly consumer-directed diagnostic services suggests that people are seeking greater visibility into their own biology. The movement toward biological measurement is already underway. What remains to be seen is how profoundly it will change the way we define health, luxury, and status. I believe it will.
The Ultimate Status Symbol May Be Invisible
There is an irony in traditional status. A person can accumulate extraordinary external indicators of success while knowing remarkably little about the biological system supporting that success. The watch can appreciate. The portfolio can grow. The company can scale. The house can become larger. Yet the one asset required to experience all of them continues changing every day.
That is why I believe the definition of luxury is beginning to move inward. Traditional status tells the world what you have acquired. Experiential status tells the world what you can access. Biological status asks a different question: What have you preserved?
The answer cannot necessarily be displayed from across a room. There may never be a logo attached to it. And perhaps that is precisely what makes the idea so interesting. The most sophisticated status signal of the next decade may not be another possession at all. It may be having the knowledge, resources, discipline, and clinical infrastructure necessary to understand your biology and steward it deliberately over time.
