Why the Next Luxury Status Symbol Is What’s Happening Inside Your Body
As traditional symbols of success become increasingly accessible, a different form of status is emerging – one measured not only by what we acquire, but by what we understand and preserve biologically. The right watch, the right car, the right address, the private club membership, first-class travel, tailored clothing, and objects and experiences have long communicated achievement, access, wealth, and position. But status symbols evolve because scarcity evolves. As yesterday’s luxuries become increasingly accessible, their ability to differentiate begins to diminish. What was once available only to a small group eventually becomes attainable by many more people, and status migrates toward something that remains difficult to acquire, access, or preserve. That raises an interesting question: What happens when the next meaningful status symbol is not something other people can see? The answer may already be emerging. Increasingly, people are spending money not merely on how they look or what they own, but on understanding what is happening inside their bodies. They are tracking sleep, cardiovascular fitness, glucose, recovery, body composition, and other dimensions of physiology. They are purchasing wearables, advanced testing, personalized nutrition, executive health services, and longevity-focused programs. The next luxury status symbol may be biological – not simply how healthy you appear, but how much you understand about your biology, how deliberately you steward it, and ultimately, what you have been able to preserve. From Material Status to Biological Status The behavioral shift underlying this idea is already measurable. McKinsey’s 2025 Future of Wellness research estimates that wellness has become a $2 trillion global industry. In the United States alone, consumers spend more than $500 billion annually on wellness, while 84 percent of U.S. consumers describe wellness as a top or important priority. The same research found growing interest in healthy aging and noted that consumers increasingly seek science-backed approaches, health-tracking devices, and other technologies that provide greater visibility into their health. That does not establish that biology has become a status symbol. It establishes something more fundamental: people are devoting substantial attention, money, and technology to understanding and influencing their biological condition. Biological measurement itself is also becoming increasingly commonplace. Pew Research Center reported in 2026 that 37 percent of U.S. adults own a smartwatch. Among upper-income adults, ownership rises to 47 percent. Nearly half of upper-income American adults carrying a biological measurement device on their wrist is not proof of a new status hierarchy, but it is evidence of a significant cultural change. Information about the body that once required a clinical encounter can increasingly accompany a person throughout the day. Taken together, these trends suggest a larger progression in the meaning of status. For much of modern consumer history, status was predominantly material: what I own. As luxury evolved, experience and exclusivity became increasingly important: what I can access. I believe another dimension is now emerging: what I can preserve. I call this biological status. Biological status is not about looking thin, appearing younger, or performing athletic feats. Appearance can be misleading, and outward fitness is not synonymous with the internal condition of a biological system. Biological status is better understood as the measurable condition and deliberate stewardship of one’s biology. That distinction changes the question from “Do I look healthy?” or even “Do I feel healthy?” to something considerably more sophisticated: What does my biology actually show, and how is it changing over time? Successful People Already Understandthe Management Principle There is an interesting contradiction at the highest levels of professional and financial success. An executive may know company performance down to the percentage point. An investor may know precisely how a portfolio is allocated. A business owner may monitor cash flow, margins, revenue growth, customer acquisition costs, and dozens of other indicators. Valuable assets are measured because measurement creates visibility, and visibility allows more informed decisions. Yet the biological system that makes it possible to build and enjoy those assets is often approached much less systematically. Health information may be distributed among an annual physical, laboratory results, a smartwatch, a specialist, a dietitian, a fitness program, and whatever information happens to be collected elsewhere. Each source can be valuable, but possessing information is not the same thing as having a coordinated understanding of a system. This is where the financial analogy becomes useful. No serious portfolio manager would examine one holding and conclude that it represents the condition of the entire portfolio. Nor would the manager make consequential decisions without considering relationships, exposures, trends, and changes over time. Human biology is vastly more complex than a financial portfolio, but the underlying management principle is relevant: what matters should be measured in context rather than understood through isolated snapshots. You can replace a watch, you can rebuild a portfolio, but you cannot purchase yesterday’s biology. The Problem Is No Longer Simply Access to Data Biological stewardship does not mean obsessively tracking every available health metric. More data does not automatically produce more understanding. The objective is to identify biologically relevant information, establish a meaningful baseline, interpret relationships among those findings, determine where clinically appropriate attention may be warranted, intervene when appropriate, and then measure again. The important transition, therefore, is not merely from no data to more data. It is from fragmented data to coordinated interpretation. That distinction is becoming increasingly important as consumers gain access to unprecedented amounts of health information. A smartwatch can generate continuous streams of physiological information and laboratory platforms can return dozens of values. At-home testing, digital health platforms, genetic testing, continuous monitoring, and other technologies can add still more information. The emerging challenge may therefore be less about obtaining data and increasingly about determining what deserves attention, what the information means in context, and how different pieces relate to one another. They measure performance, monitor risk, reconsider allocations as circumstances change, distinguish short-term volatility from long-term deterioration, and recognize that preserving capital matters alongside growing it. Most importantly, they understand that decisions made today can materially influence what remains available tomorrow. There are financial advisors, portfolio managers, accountants, attorneys, insurance specialists, estate planners, investment committees, and family offices built around this responsibility. Consider, however, a different portfolio. It is the portfolio that determines whether you can think clearly, recover from stress, move without restriction, maintain energy, regulate metabolism, tolerate physical demands, repair tissue, remain resilient, and continue doing the things that make accumulated wealth worth having. It is your biology. For many people, no one is actually managing it as a portfolio. That is the gap. Your Body Is More Than a Collection of Parts Modern healthcare has become extraordinarily capable at identifying and treating specific diseases, injuries, infections, and medical emergencies. Specialists can examine individual organ systems with remarkable precision. But the body itself does not operate as a collection of independent departments. Metabolism affects cardiovascular function. Sleep affects immune activity. Hormones interact with metabolism. Nutrition influences cellular processes. Physical activity changes multiple physiological systems. Stress can affect sleep, metabolic regulation, cardiovascular function, and behavior simultaneously. Inflammation is similarly interconnected. All systems overlap. That means a person can have several physicians, undergo annual testing, take medications, exercise regularly, eat carefully, and still lack something surprisingly basic: a coordinated view of how the biological portfolio is performing as a whole and how that performance is changing over time. Having doctors is not necessarily the same thing as having someone managing your entire biological portfolio. The mandates are different. Most medical care is appropriately designed to diagnose disease, treat pathology, manage symptoms, or address a defined clinical problem. Think in Terms of Biological Capital Financial capital represents resources that can be deployed. Biological capital is a useful way to think about the functional capacity available to support your life. Your ability to concentrate during a demanding day requires biological capacity. So does recovering from exercise, maintaining stable energy, sleeping well, tolerating stress, repairing tissue, regulating glucose, mounting an appropriate immune response, maintaining physical strength, and preserving cognitive function. Biological capital should not be confused with a medical diagnosis, a single laboratory measurement, or a proprietary score. It is a conceptual framework for understanding something most people already recognize intuitively: we do not possess unlimited physiological capacity. That capacity changes. Some aspects can improve. Others can deteriorate. Some losses accompany aging. Others may be influenced by behavior, environment, disease, medications, nutrition, physical conditioning, metabolic health, inflammation, and numerous other factors. The important point is not that every biological change can be prevented. It cannot. The point is that your biological portfolio is changing whether anyone is managing it or not. Your Portfolio Can Drift Portfolio managers understand drift. An investment portfolio constructed years ago does not remain unchanged simply because the owner stops looking. Assets perform differently, risk exposure changes, circumstances evolve, and an allocation that once made sense may no longer reflect the present portfolio. Biology also changes while you’re not looking. The metabolism you had at 35 may not be the metabolism you have at 50. Recovery can change. Body composition can change. Sleep can change. Cardiovascular risk can change. Medication requirements can change. Nutritional status can change. Physical capacity can change. Inflammatory patterns can change. These changes do not necessarily announce themselves dramatically. Some deterioration is obvious. Much of it is gradual. That creates an important distinction between catastrophe and drift. Healthcare is very good at responding to catastrophe. Meanwhile Biological Portfolio Management is also concerned with drift. The relevant question becomes: Has your biology changed while your management strategy stayed the same? For many people, it has. A Snapshot Is Not a Trajectory Imagine trying to manage a substantial financial portfolio using one statement every year. It would tell you what existed on one date, but it would tell you very little about direction. Biological measurements have a similar limitation. A laboratory result is valuable, but by itself it is still a snapshot. Repeat the measurement under comparable conditions and something new becomes visible: change. Repeat it again and a trajectory may begin to emerge. This distinction is foundational. A single fasting glucose value tells you something. A longitudinal pattern tells you something different. The same principle applies to many biomarkers. Direction matters. Magnitude of change matters. Context matters. Clinical interpretation matters. Although the details differed from patient to patient, the overall pattern remained very consistent. What struck me was that inflammation was almost always being approached through isolated pathways.
